Hey Guys (Gals),

I'm 59 years old with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.  I have grilled for 40+ years but tried my hand at BBQ on my Weber.  Worked my ass off for 6 hours keeping the temperature at 220-235 and the baby back ribs were cooked fine.  The Costco rub sucked (too saltly) and my BBQ guests were diplomatically appreciative of my efforts.  Do you have any rubs you like?  My disappointment aside, the party was a great success!

Respectfully submitted,

Snorkel Billy Bob

PS.  This is a great site.  Thank you smokingmeatformus.com.

PPS.  I live in Leucaudia, CA.  I know the rest of the country thinks we are surfing flakes, but we we do appreciatice good BBQ.

The McCormick's off the shelf at the local grocery is pretty good but I make my own. but that is what I started with and still like. Most rubs are pretty basic just look around on the forum. The one I use the most is mostly brown sugar.

The McCormick's pork rub was what I used the other day on my first try with my new smoker. It was alright, but I had some other issues as well with learning the new unit.

But anyway, welcome Billy Bob, I'm new here too, but have been reading for a while. Just trying to learn what I can.

McCormick's has always been top of the line for spices but I do have to say their rubs suck.......IMHO

Welcome to SMF BB.. Glad to have you aboard

Welcome. I use very little salt in my rubs. With so many other herbs and spices why would you want all that salt.

Bob welcome to the forum! You got a few good pointers for a good rub start already, and if you poke around the forum you will find more rub recipes than you can shake a stick at. Now for your temps - I noticed you are an Ol' Weber fan, and already have the Weber Kettle. I would suggest you look at the Weber Smokey Mountain smokers, they come in two sizes 18.5" and 22.5", and are considered as one of the best smokers you can buy for under $400.

Like all Weber products, they just plain work right out of the box and for a charcoal smoker are as close to set-it-and-forget-it as you can get. I have the 22.5" WSM (Weber Smokey Mountain) and the 22.5" Kettle and I love being able to take the rack of ribs straight from the smoker and drop it into my kettle, cooking grate and all.

Thanks for the tip.  I will check it out.  I am looking for a smoker because keeping the temp consistent was way too much work.

Enjoy the day.
