So, my buddy at work found out how much fun I was having with my smoker, and found one at a garage sale. I don't know what brand, other than it's a vertical propane. Oh, and it's black

.

He said that it looks fairly clean inside, probably was used a few times and then stored in the garage (the racks were fairly clean). No rust, but I suggested that he should make sure it gets seasoned properly. Should he de-grease it and then season it? If so, what's good for cleaning? Any advise would be appreciated. I'm going over next week to help him drag it up 2 flights of stairs.

I'd just use high heat to clean it like the self cleaning mode in your oven then smoke some pieces of fat (sausage, bacon, fat cap from a butt, etc).  I would not use chemicals.

If you have to use a cleaner I suggest Simple Green, it is non-toxic and does a great job, but like Bama said try just using a long high heat burn first.

Tell him you will keep it at YOUR house for him to use lol. Maybe he will 4 get about it and you have another smoker lol

I agree with Bama and Johnny, high heat burn! If there is any grease laying in the bottom I would wipe it out with some paper towels first but the high heat will kill any bacteria or critters that might be living in it. After, smoke some food in it then show us the Q-view!
