I have noticed that every time I add chunks or chips to the pan, I only get an hour or so smoke if I am lucky.  I have also noticed that wood almost always ignites (even if I have soaked them).  One of the last times I had a long smoke I decided to fill up my chip pans with chunks and cover it with foil making some holes in the foil.  But I must not have done a very good job of foiling it because the chunks bursed into flames and my temps shot through the roof.

Does anyone know of away to get a long lasting smoke while still maintaining the use of the chip pan?   I may try the foil method again but do a better job of making it a bit more air tight.

I do not want to use the Amazing pellet smoker gizmo either.

Why don't you want to use the Amazing pellet smoker gizmo? People are getting 4-5 hours out of the Tube in propane smokers.

I fought the chunks not lasting long enough issue for awhile then gave up and modded my smoker to use the AMNPS and couldn't be happier with it!

What kind of smoke ring do you get with it?  I don't really want to modify my smoker or add another component if it is not absolutely necessary.  Not a real good reason but I hoping there is away for me to prolong my smoke times..

what material is your chip pan made from? i replaced mine with a big cast iron skillet( 10 x 16) and if it catches fire i  just move it off to the cooler sides spots.

The chip pans are some kind of a coated steel, not really too heavy duty.  I think I am going to experiment with wrapping my chip pan air tight with foil and making only a few little holes to see what that does.
