I've given up on the charcoal basket. It works, but I find myself just tossing various logs into the fire once it's going so the basket gets in the way. If I were doing all charcoal I'd still do the basket, but since I went to logs my smokes are even better.

Is there a way to build this particular basket without welding?  I would like to make one similar to this one but I have a few questions.

Could you please send me a material list?

What did you use to cut the material?

I want to make something a little bigger than what came with my smoker.  If there is less space between the walls of the basket and the walls of the firebox. The baskey will obviously still need to get in and out of the door and I would say there is about 1 inch clearance around the basket if I make it just bigg enough to get in the FB.

Does anyone think I will have issues keeping the fire going if I make the basket bigger than what I have but still keeping the inch of clearance??

You can make a 12" x12" x6" deep out of a 2' by 2' sheet of expanded steel. Cut 6" deep at 6" from each edge and simply fold all the flaps together. You can use wire or nuts and bolts to secure everything. No welds and the sides with seams will be doubled for extra strength

I also give up on the basket in my OKJ! I simply can not get enough heat without using a ton of charcoal. I now use wood chucks about the size of a 24 oz beer can and it works great for me.
