I know I put this in the propane forum....but I am wondering about the Kamodo Kooker (on sale at Gander Mountain for $299.00)....its the one that is steel on the outside and porcelain in the indside.  Pros...cons?

Also---my Chef friend said he would give me his Smoke Vault...and I think It's the propane kind.  It's huge and he does not use it.  Pros.....cons?

The Smoke Vault is very nice and is popular around here. Sounds like you can't beat the Price either!

If it's Huge it is probably the 24" wide model which is a lot bigger than that Komodo. Kind of a no brainer Kiddo...

Kamodo Kooker,

This is similar to the BGE (Big Green Egg) and is a charcoal smoker.  There is a learning curve on maintaining the correct temps, once you learn that then it should be pretty great smoking/grilling!

The Kamodo Kooker is a charcoal unit, whereas the Smoke Vault is a propane unit; you will find the smoke vault much easier for smoking as it is more of a 'set and forget' unit.  However, it is not for grilling, just smoking.  And free is the best price you can get!

I have the GOSM Big Block and the Smoke Vault is a copy of that.  I love it and still use mine on occasion when I'm just smoking stuff for the wife, a couple of the kids and me. For a whole dang family cook (18-20 ppl) I kick over to the stick burner.

If you can swing it, take the Smoke Vault and buy the Komodo and have the option of propane or using charcoal. Although I'll admit to using my propane GOSM as a chacoal burner a time or twa~

I figured that would be what you guys would say.  (Free...is always great)....It's the huge one.  Chef said it's as big as him...he "aint" a little guy..is 6'5" + and weighs about the same....lol.....  We just have to replace the chip pan.

The Kamodo sounds great...and our regular grill needs some work...or chunking cause I can find the parts to replace on it.  It's an inexpensive CharBroil from Wally World.

Would love to be able to have a BGE....but the cost is a problem...have one more kidlet to get thru college.

Knew yall would tell me what my head was thinking!  Thanks a million!

a little late to the party but get the free one and see what you need after that. i only have small parties but since i like to use different flavored woods for different stuff. I want 2 smokers now! :).

i looking at one of those Kamodo types as well. I have a propane smoker and grill so that style seams like  nice multipurpose grill. good to smoke a brisket/pork butt while doing rib or sear some steaks.

what you will love is teh size of that big smoker. getting full racks of ribs on in there is awesome. my masterbuilt does 3 babyback per shelf or 2 (9x13) pans. a typical smoke will be 6 racks of ribs, a half sheet of chicken bites. half sheet of pork candy and then some mach and cheese and veggies on top shelf.

now i need to do pork butt on a seperate smoker! lol. it's an addication. addiction.

Not late at all!  We have loads of friends who come over and "pool it" during the Summer Months.  I haven't had "Elvira" (small electric Brinkman) long at all....and I wanna bigger one!!!!  The free one is truely the best $  lol!  Just wondering if the Kamodo one would be good to replace the actual gas grill...and have the extra room to boot!  I am so addicted to this new hobby!

Biggest cons with that particular komodo are lack of cooking space and probably build quality.  Lowes carries a similar komodo that has decent build quality but still require mods to maintain temps (at least from what Ive read).

Yall will hear me yelling and doing the "happy dance" when a "new" one gets to the house.  Chef said we can come get his any time....will share pics.  I really do appreciate all the advise!

Well....saw the smoker last nite.  It's huge to say the least.  Big Poppa will be home here at Norman Manor this Sunday.  He needs some clean up and a new chip pan and will be good as new!  Not really that heavy to pick up....but it's the size that makes it a bite difficult for one person to move it.  Can't wait!  Doing a happy dance!!!  Will have pics during the cleaning and firing up process!

Brought "Big Poppa" home yesterday.  (Smoke Vault 24)...the chip pan is majorly cracked so we have ordered one to replace it.  Doing to elbow grease thing to get the racks and other things cleaned up a bit.  Boy this thing is huge!  Can't wait to fir that big boy up!  Going to try something this coming weekend.  Can't believe all the bells and whistles this thing has on it!

You're gonna have fun with Big Poppa. If the racks are really bad, just use some easy off oven cleaner. It's strip 'em clean in no time. Enjoy your "new" toy.

The jerky tray is pretty rusted.  The other racks are decent.  Just gotta get some elbow grease to them.  The chip tray is almost cracked totally thru.  That part is being replaced as of yesterday. Getting some Easy Off at Dollar General this week...and will get things cleaned by this weekend.  Can't wait to try this bad boy!

Just a tip to help with the cleaning...I spray the racks all over with oven cleaner, put them into a large garbage bag, close it and let sit overnight. Then I take the hose to them and they come out sparkly new!
Thanks Alesia, never thought of that.  I read somewhere to put them on the lawn and when they lay in the damp grass from the dew they are easy to clean.  I started laying them in the grass and keep the area damp with a hose for about an hour, don't know why it works but they clean right up.
