Chinook, Montana
I posted a new thread before I roll called, sorry guys. so a little about myself. I live in Chinook, Mt, which is a long way from anywhere. It's up north about 30 miles as the crow flies from Canada. It is very windy, and the smoker I have (cajun Injector electric) doesn't seem to hold a temperature very well. It could be operator error, but how hard can it be to set a digital temperature and let it go? Anyways, I love to cook and grill, and I have recently started smoking, and therefore my knowledge is limited. There are very few people up here who care about it either, as most people concern themselves with farming and ranching (I do as well). I like to get my meat from costco, but the nearest one is 3.5 hours away. My next best option is Wal Mart, so It can be hard at times. Well I'm happy to be here and finally have someone to talk to about meat instead of breeding cows and cutting hay!

Welcome to Civilization :) .... I had to drive 30 minutes(one way)today to find pork belly. We live where we are accustomed to driving 5 or 10 minutes to get anything we need.

If you decide to try a stick or charcoal burner I would recommend something with 1/4" thick steel walls mainly because of your climate...They're plentiful here in the Southern U.S. but maybe fewer and further between where you live...A custom build would probably an option.

I don't know about electric outdoor cookers at all...

Good place here with gobs of info and help!!!

Hey nothing to apologize for, we're happy you joined us! There's no order in which you do things, we just want to get to know you!

 to SMF!!!

Might not be very many people up there who care about smoking but there sure are a lot around here and they all just love to help others and love to share their talents!

You might want to check out Jeff's Free 5 day E-course, it will teach you all the basics and a whole lot more: http://www.smoking-meat.com/smoking-basics-ecourse.html

I feel your pain on those windy days, I get a lot of temp fluctuations on my propane smoker on windy days. Have you tried to make some sort of a wind break for your smoker on those windy days? Something as simple as a couple of pieces of plywood will work.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah I have been thinking about building a smoker. There are a ton of old water heaters and propane tanks around, so it could be a fun project. As far as shelters go, I have to put up plywood almost everytime I smoke. Its easier in the summer, lets put it that way.

Hello and welcome to SMF! No apologies needed, we're glad to have you here! Actually your description of where you live sounds so appealing to me! But I can also feel your pain, as I've lived in places that make you feel like you are removed from civilization.

Again, welcome!

WELCOME TO SMF !!!    Ya got a Texican Smoker here, from Rockport, Texas down on the coastal bend of Texas!!!

Chinook, Montana....Wow I lived in Butte, Montana for 18 years and I sympathize with your dilemma;  Not only does it get Cold and Windy, you don't have much of a choice of wood for smoking.  You might like to checkout Jeff's Amazing Smoker.

A thought here;  you might want to check into building a permanent shelter for your smoker, depending on the size of your smoker, it shouldn't take too much time or $$$$.  As for the meat, do you hunt??  There are some GOOD venison ideas here, and don't forget the hogs!

You'll love this place, and learn LOTS! ( I sure have!) & Don't be afraid to ask questions, there is a LOT of knowledge here, and a LOT of good advice. Not to mention some great folks who are VERY willing to share. Can’t forget the Great Q-Views!!

SOOO....Welcome and good smoking, and ATSG... 'Smoke 'em if you got got 'em' !!! (as the saying goes)
