Before I ask this question let me preface this with I do know that it varies depending on the smoker, weather conditions, cut of meat etc.... to reach the right temp for the meat.  But everything I have been reading says that beef seems to take 1.5 hrs/lb to cook.  I also know that other roasts pork shoulders for example also take 1.5 hrs/lb except those get cooked to 190 deg. plus where as the prime rib I am going to be looking for mid 100's.

So my question is do I need to really plan on 1.5 hours/lb for this almost 9 lb roast?

And should I cut it in half for 2 4.5 lb roasts?

Expect 35-50 minutes per lb as a rough estimate to get the Prime Rib to 135-140 smoking at 225. Place the probe near the center and you will have med rare in the center and the outer slices will be a little more done. My wife likes the pulled at 135 I like them pulled at 140 then if my Father is there I have to cook his a little more and what I do is put some Aujus in a pan and simmer his to medium
