SH,

I cut the top at of the door at 10 degrees off of 12'oclock and the bottom of the door exactly at 3 o'clock.  (So, my door is a total of 80 degrees of the tank circumference.

Here's a section view of the smoker door:

I hope this helps.....

Nice build.  I like the size for a family and friend cooker, small enough to use all the time.  I've been wanting to build one and have a local gas company that will give me a 250 gal tank but I think that's a little too big for me to justify heating up to cook for the family.  Will probably cut it down to a smaller size.  I'd like it big enough to handle a small pig (75-100 lbs).

Just curious why you made your door opening 80 degrees and not a full 90?  I'd like to hear your thoughts.  Thanks.

HD,

I had originally intended to put a prep area shelf in front of the doors that was approximately 12"deep.  By going with the door at 80 degrees, I moved my hinge point a little over 2" closer to the front of the smoker with virtually no loss in the height of the opening.  When the door is fully open, it's just a little easier to reach the handle on the door to close it.  It probably doesn't make that big of a difference on a small 24" diameter tank, but I would definitely think it would make a difference on the larger diameter tanks.

In addition, it makes the doors a little lighter and easier to open.

Later I decided I didn't want the shelf.

Thanks,

Great looking smoker ,I've been asking what kind of paint people are using and yours looks great . How's it holding up on the firebox? I would appreciate any tips and info you could give, thanks

Wow, beautiful build Boomhower!  Meticulous details/planning/execution... you created a masterpiece!  Thanks for sharing.

I'm picking up my tank from junkyard in Green Bay on Monday and meeting with my neighbor/fab guy soon to get my first smoker started... kinda like Christmas all over again!   Any chance you'd be willing to share your plans/CAD drawings with me via PM?  Thanks in advance Boom.  --Tom

Love the smoker. Any chance you'd care to share some drawings you have on this? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Awesome!

I'm planning to build one. My first trailer. Gasprices here are $8 a gallon so I'm trying to make it light enough to afford some prime cuts when I tow it to where ever. I have some questions.

Looks like you didn't make a gutter in the reverse plate. that's some weight saving. is it stainless steel?

Is it enough to keep the fire out of your cookingarea?

Does the fatdrain work properly?

Is a square firebox better then a cilinder of the same size?

What holds the grid in to place when you pull them out?

And what's the weight of the thing?

Again. Awesome. If you could, thanks for the answers.

Don't try to save weight ..... You need thermal mass to keep the smoker at an even temp...... build it with all the bells and whistles so you will be happy with the way it performs..... Saving a nickel or a dime, is not the way to build a custom smoker.....

I guess the only option is to build it with a 125 gallon instead of a 250 gallon tank then. You're right. Butt it still leaves my question: do you need a gutter in the RF plate?

Gutter ??? Yes...... Drain in the RF plate ??? Yes..... unless you want grease fires that can burn up your food.... Drain in the CC ??? Yes to aid in cleaning the smoker....

And possibly a "dam" between the FB and CC..... that keeps stuff from getting in the FB....

What I did for my drain is that it is located under my RF plate. My RF plate was a slight down slope so it should fall off the edge and into the hole. And if for some reason it gets past the hole, the opening from firebox and CC has a small wall.

Hello all. Haven't been on here in a while. Gonna be starting a 500 gallon reverse flow build for our church in the next month or so. It probably wont be as pretty ad my first one, but we'll be able to do some volume! I'll start a thread for that when we start.

It looks like something updated and lost all the photos of the build. Any way to get them re-uploaded? I have been using this post to plan out my build for a 60 gallon.
