this will be my first smoker i have ever built i grew up on a farm pit smoking pigs and we did ham on one of the webber charcol smokers my father recently bought a bradly smoker thats just amazing but i cant afford that  so i picked up an old stainless tub from my job which is what i plan to start with but the desicions i have to make heep me confused this i plan to put the tub in a steal shell with stove insulation a round it i want to be able to cold smoke as well as smoke norally so the plan is to have a second source for the smoke and heat my fisrt major desicion is gas electric or charcol so im wanting help and input on pros and cons of each.

this is what i have to start with i am also considering adding a thermal plate but not sure

rominger, evening and welcome to the forum..... You found your way to the greatest smoking forum on the web..... folks here are friendly and are willing to help answer questions that arise.....  

About your smoker plans.....   Looks a little small from the picture....  Below is the thread section on smoker builds....  Cruise thru it to get some ideas of what others have built and put together some ideas for your own personal build... any questions you may come up with please feel free to ask away...  In time you may become addicted to smoking stuff and this Forum.... enjoy the long smokey ride.....

im leaning towards propane and lava rocks to start any thoughts
 
Your cabinet is almost identical to the MES 40".  Should be a great size to get started with, and electric would work pretty well in it also.
 
im not sure how to go about the electric for sure.  my fear with gas is the amout of useage but not needinga outlet near opens up alot of possibilities
