Another Michigander

Hi everybody, I live and grew up in the Kalamazoo/Portage area of Michigan.  Allow me to tell you a little bit of my pertinent history... we had a kettle grill when I was a kid, and I loved to grill stuff on it, but eventually its leg mounts gave out and we got rid of it.  We replaced it with a propane grill, and then another, and now a third one that has been converted to natural gas.  They're convenient, but they're just not the same.  I visited a friend early this year, and he and his dad made ribs.  They did them in the oven, but finished them on a kettle grill with charcoal.  I bit into a rib and tasted that wonderful, smoky flavor that I had been missing for so many years.  After I gorged myself on the ribs, I decided I needed to step up my game, and I finally found myself a 22.5" Weber kettle grill on Craigslist about a month ago.  I "smoked" some chicken breasts on it with indirect heat and a few chunks of hickory, and they came out absolutely delicious: tender and smoky.  I've also grilled burgers, brats, and the other usual stuff on it, but I haven't tried any real barbeque yet.  I need to get or make a rib rack and maybe a good thermometer before I try a real low and slow.

The main reason I joined here is my friend and I want to make a smoker out of the 275-gallon home heating oil tank he has in his basement.  I've already gotten alot of good ideas from the forums, but we'll probably need to start asking some questions soon.

We have yet to get the tank out of his basement (not looking forward to that), but tomorrow we're going to take the rear axle out of a '93 Plymouth minivan so we can eventually make the smoker mobile.  Should we take the springs too?  We're thinking that the minivan springs will be excessively large and stiff for the smoker.

Say, is there a page with a guide to the abbreviations used on this forum?  Sometimes I get a little lost in the alphabet soup.
