can anyone advise me on the best stuff to use to seal my wooden smoker

i was thinking of doing the outside in clear polyurathane but there are a few small gaps that need filling where the wood joins etc

wood putty comes to mind?

i just wasnt sure if i needed a heat proof stuff

and about any fumes given of, will look into the putty
