Pastrami and New Cooking Toy

I haven't posted anything in while my brother pasted away last week from cancer and I spent as much time as possible with him prior to his passing.  He was a remarkable man.  Retired Batllion Fire Chief, he saved so many lives but no one could save his.  This is my brother Randall Jones, he was 56 years old.

In 2009 I bought him a Smoker for Christmas but gave it to him early.   He had been wanting a smoker for some time.  The neighbors two pygmy goats came to visit while we were setting his smoker and ate the instructions while we were in eating lunch.  This Thanksgiving 2009 you can see the box the smoker came in the background and the smoker in pieces.

I pulled myself together yesterday and did some retail therapy and went out and bought a new cooking toy.  This is the new cooking toy but I tell ya that if I had to grind my flour etc using this I'd go hungry!!!!  LOL!!! Think I'll stick with the good old coffee/spice grinder.  Looks cool sitting on the kitchen counter.

First off sorry for your loss i lost my father a few years back and i know how it feels!! My condolence to your family!!

 

Hey but that's some good looking pastrami and a nice molcajete!! Keep your spirits up with good food and family its the best thing to do.

Sorry for your loss - I know the feeling having lost a brother myself.

 

The pastrami looks great now for the mortar and pestle - it is great when you want to grind up some garlic add some herbs like for a chicken - it also works great on spices like whole cumin and pepper corns. It just takes a little getting used to

Sorry to hear about your brother, from the picture and your description sounds like he was a great man.

 

Your pastrami looks great! I will be posting some of my pastrami experiment here soon, I just pulled mine from the brine.

 

I really like that mortar and pestle, I've always wanted one of the stone ones like that.

Sorry for your loss also. Now for your pastrami it sure looks good so far. Do you have some juniper berrys in that mortar n pastle. That is the secret to a good pastrami in my book.

I know what you are going thur so let me say how sorry I am for your loss. All i can say is that it will get "better" with time............ Keep those spirits high, for when one door is closed another opens...............

I brined the meat for 10 days+ in fact I can't remember when I started the brining process.  I figured I better cook it now. I did put juniper berries and allspice in it.  This last week I got in some cinnamon bark bits and dried ginger root so I put those in and I also threw in some whole cloves grounded it all up with the pickling spices.  It turned out so so so good.  It was a big piece of meat.  I put a little of the spice mixture  on some salmon I smoked at the same time.   The spices were really good on the fish too.   I would have taken pictures of it but salmon did not make off the patio I consumed it immediately in fact hubby was out with his kids and he didn't get any of it.  I know that was bad.  I can not be left alone with smoked fish or pie.

I got the mortar and pestal at World Market/Cost Plus here in Vegas.  I think they have stores nationwide.  I know they have a website.

Great looking Pastrami...I think one of them Goats would fit in the smoker, a little Goatstrami maybe?...JJ

Sorry to hear about your brother, 56 is a young age. Only the good die young they say,,,,,,

 

Your Pastrami looks very good and the mortar and pestle is cool looking, I had one many years ago my girlfriends mom from Cuba used to mash up garlic.

You are right they would fit perfectly in the smoker.  I've had goat it is pretty goodl   Those two goats are always up to some kind of mischief.  They are funny little critters.  They loved my brother when they saw him working in the yard they would come over and follow him around like a couple of pet dogs.

So sorry for your loss. Cancer is pure evil. The pastrami looks outstanding! I second the idea on throwing one of the goats on the smoker...I will be getting one all butchered up in the spring and might just take a shot making some goatstrami lol.
