sugar sauce that caramelize, how can i make a simple one ?

One of the members posted this question in the Rib Wiki and I though he would get better response on the forum so help him out for me!  He may be shy so I'll let him check in!
 
I can help but I am not sure what he what's or what he is trying to accomplish...JJ
 
The caramelized sugar  enhances the strawberries' sweetness, while the peppercorns add a surprising zing. So taking the caramelized sugar  off the burner before adding the butter  tastes great.
