Sealing a door with fiberglass rope

When i finish my smoker build i would like to seal my doors with some fiberglass rope, or any rope that would be functionable to seal the door. Does anybody have any pictures of their doors sealed with rope? or have any advice on what kind of rope to get?

I have heard that some of the rope will shed fibers into the meat so i would like to get something that would not do that.

 to the fouum. For the seal get flat Stove rope , you will most likely have more luck attaching it to the Smoker with Pop rivets and some high temp silicon over the rivets. In any case , make sure you have the lid recessed to seal(formed to the Pit).Don't force the closure as you will make more leaks.

I just made a gasket for my lid out of Permatex Ultra Black RTV.

So far it looks like a great fit and seal. I haven't yet fired it up since making this seal but the product is rated up to 500 degrees.

Least expense option, locally available. Seemed worth trying, I'll know after this weekend how it handles the heat.

Not to 

 or any thing but I wounder if that Permatex Ultra Black RTV would work on my Master Forge. I am having a heck of a time keeping rope gasket on the doors.

I used Permatex high-temp RED RTV Silicone #26BR for gasket for my propane smoker.  It is rated at 650 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you decide to go with a silicone gasket, be sure to thoroughly clean the side where you want the gasket material to stick.  on the side you don't want it to stick, you can use plastic wrap and once it is fully cured, the gasket won't stick to the plastic wrap side.

The upside to using silicone is that it will conform to any gaps you have and is easy to trim off the excess.  The downside is that, later, if the door/frame bends/dents/etc.,. the silicone doesn't conform to the changed shape as well as fiberglass rope.

I smoked on mine yesterday and the new seal did great. I actually was looking to use the high temp red RTV but my local auto parts didn't have it in a caulk tube. The Ultra Black did a great job though.
