Red Wine question

I know it wouldbe just as easy to go out and buy a new bottle for nomore thah it cost. But I have a bottle of Red Wine vinegar that has a best by date of June 28 2010. It has never been opened. DIL says she thinks it would be good yet since its unopenened and vinegar doesnt spoil and wine gets better with age. While that may be true or not, Im tempted to try it. Any thoughts? This bottle was put back in the cupboard behind other things and forgotten, nice and dark space.

Open it up and pour some into a bowl. If it is bad you are going to find little black things in it.  If none then give it a finger taste. If it is good both ways, I would use it without hesitation

Open it, if it taste good use it, there is nothing that could make it Dangerous to drink, it can just go thru changes that make it not so tasty...JJ

I did look for little floaters in the bottle but saw none and it looks clear enough when I shook it. Not sure how it would taste, except like a vinegar but dont likethetaste of it plain out of the bottle. I think I will try it. Thanks for the reassurance.

Pellet, I would not cook with Anything you won't Drink straight out of the bottle, it will not get any better after it is cooked...JJ 

 

Ooops your Post says RED WINE, my brain got locked in and didn't see the vinegar part, Cool it Scarbelly! I'm gettin' old too!...But I'll stand by a slightly modified prior statement...

 

I would not cook with Anything that don't taste good straight out of the bottle, it will not get any better after it is cooked... There are some great other Vinegars like Balsamic, Sherry, Champagne and Rice vinegar that do the job and are less Acidic and may be more to your liking...JJ

As JJ said, the taste could be degraded or it might not have been good wine vinegar in the first place.  There is a great difference in the quality of wine vinegars.  If the taste is wrong, try something else.
