Here is what I am working with...

It is a traffic signal control cabinet, I was going to use the computer server cabinet from a previous post but found out would be able to get my hands on one of theses babies and all progress stopped until I got the call to pick it up.

She was going to be electric but given the size (almost 4'x2'x5') I decided to go black pipe propane stick burner.

Stay tuned for progress.

(actually it's done so I will be posting as though I'm building it, I was so motivated while putting it together it consumed my life didn't even want to slow down to post)

Not the actual one I got but close                                                      Here is what I got (legally

Next step was stripping the paint...this went a lot easier than the server cabinet. Just some stripper and a pressure washer.

Note the little access door, perfect for a quick peek.

Construction of the bottom plate and the pipe burner mount:

Note the hole in the middle for air flow... the AMNPS will have the same

Burner and AMNPS in place ready for a test fire:

The aluminum cabinet will need to be insulated... Hardibacker board anyone?

also gonna have to rethink the small plate over the burner...larger steel plate will work.

Welded up a mount for the propane tank and rigged up a venturi with a bell fitting and orafice:

Hardibacker in place with a light coat of high temp spray paint to tie it all together.

Nice blue flame if I say so myself:

Let me get it straight you killed the traffic light in your neighborhood just so you can build a smoker ?

On serious note this build looks amazing.

No traffic lights were harmed during the making of this smoker...

I am in a position that I come in contact with traffic engineers on a regular basis and after a year of hounding they finally broke down and offered up a slightly damaged cabinet that was set for the scrap heap...

I have been able to sustain a good 220° to 230° with the length of burner I have but for sausage I'm gonna have to tone it down a bit with a shorter burner, otherwise turning the flame down so low risks a flame out...

220° is just fine for some ribs and an inaugural run (after a long high temp burn to get rid of the nasties).

Here she sits in all her glory. Note the dampers just above the door, the whole under side is perforated so I just devised a way to damper it there and no need to cut a hole in the roof.

The real bummer is that it is aluminum and I had no way to weld on it but I made do. (I certainly cannot complain)

My jalapeno plants did not fair to well this winter even in AZ.

you can put a pilot flame so if it gos of it will start again.

"you can put a pilot flame so if it gos of it will start again."

I have considered that but I am at a loss for a low cost valve set up, I would also like to get a thermocouple involved.

I have searched low and high and cant seem to find one that fits the bill. Maybe a propane hot water heater valve...

How about a pilot and thermocouple safety control for a gas fireplace?
