wood box opened or closed

I would assume there are some vents in this wood box?? I am not familiar with it, but you really do not want the chips/chunks to catch on fire, so leaving the lid on would help control this. I know in my one smoker I just foil the chips, then poke a few small holes in the foil, then place the foil packet in the box. Seems to work fine.
