Brinkmann Vertical Charcoal Smoker Model 810-5504-s

I used to do a lot of smoker but got away from it and my son gave me this smoker for Christmas.  I use it on Sunday and did a Turkey.  It came out very good but I had to finish it in the oven.  I was unable to get the temp up on the smoker over 150.  What do I need to do to get the temp up.  Would it be better to get some wood and use that over charcoal?  I looking forward to using it a lot like I use to.  Thanks for any infromation
