Hey Charlie,

First off, welcome to SMF, secondly, seein' hows you haven't started welding yet may I offer a little friendly  advice that will definitely save your back, ...you might want to consider a guillotine type, I've used the horizontal ones and the guillotine just makes life so much easier with not having to pick up the wood off of the ground every time you split, ...the split wood stays on the table.

hey all

and thx for checking the build out  i do alot of smoking whenever  i can and i also have a fireplace with a insert

so im always working on getting wood for both

i know it doesn't look like much at the moment but im going to be working on it this December  i have some time off

and i really need a splitter

so i figured i could build one  i have most of the parts to do it and thought it might be cool to  post and get feedback

justpassingthru commented about a guillotine type splitter  so handling of the wood would be less

i agree  and the plan is to make  it where i can fold it over for transport and unlock it and stand it up

vertically to process logs

ill take some more pics when i get started cutting and welding i have a Lil 1000lb trailer to pick up this week

and after that ill only need some hydraulic fittings and lines

keep in mind im trying to go with a budget build for the most cost effective and the most bang for the buck

so far i only have about 300.00 in this build

and really trying to use up all the  stuff i have around the garage  as far as parts

some things i know ill have to purchase

hopefully this will turn out good so that others can follow and learn and use things they already have

to make the things they need for low buck builds

im always building something its i guess a hobby or habit or something always  working on a project when im done with one im looking for another

any and all comments suggestions and criticism taken

please feel free to list any why for why nots and how comes

this is the first build i have done and posted online

so all comments are welcome

cheers

Hey Charley,

Sounds like you have a plan, my question is why make the guillotine fold down, seems like it would be the weak link with 25 tons of pressure and dry wood or a large knot, we cut our logs into 18" lengths and the top of the ram wasn't over 6' high mounted on a trailer, ...it was the table that folded up on the sides of the guillotine.

I love to build stuff, ...can't wait 'til you start it.

Gene

this is what im trying to build

the only reason for the fold up is just for portability i usually travel to where i cut wood

and a friend is helping me build and fund the project he also has a fireplace and is into smoking

i have some vacation starting next week so  planning on starting on everything then

thanks for checking it out, ill put up some more pics when i get the torch fired up

If i ever needed to split wood again  I would want this,. I am sure the cost is unreal, but man watch this thing work.

well went and picked up the tralor today its a lil guy  but the tires say load rating of 780lbs each so that should haul a log splitter

its been sitting for a while under a friends barn

i prolly need some new tires  but what the hell you cant beat free no matter how you slice it

This is great! I have been thinking about how I would build one of these lately. I dove head first into my first RF smoker build recently so I should probably finish that first. Good luck and keep the pics coming!
