A couple of questions

I have an MES40 but as a newby I hesitate to use it under some conditions:

What happens to the electronics on the top if it rains?

In cold/windy weather (normal s. Illiois winter) do I need to take special actions for these conditions?

Will the MES handle 30-40 degree weather ok?

Thanks for your help again!

You do not want the electronics to get wet. Once it is going it will handle the cold weather fine. It's very well insulated. However to get it started in cold weather you will need to put a pan of boiling water inside to warm it up or the controller won't let it start up.

Steve,

I don't have your smoker but many here do.  Be patient and someone will come along soon to help you.  If you do not get an answere contact the manufacturer.  I will try and send someone your way soon.

I agree with Al, water and electronics not good mix.

to help with the cold and wind you could build a windbreak around the smoker.

and even put a top on it to keep the rain off of it.

I've got a metal storage shed that I store the smoker, lawn mower, & misc junk all us guys have - any problem w/ using the smoker in the shed w/ the door open?

I'm probably breaking the rules, but mine is in the garage.  When the smoker is on the door goes up at least a little, venting it out the side wall through a fan is on the to do list.  So far I have had good luck with temps in Iowa.  I think I would definitely try to build a cover or use a porch for some shelter.
