Will it work for my first build?

What I am trying to do is use the firebox for the horizonal smoker as well as using it for the whole smoker by the use of the dampers.  With these dampers installed would it give me this option? The smoker is set up as reverse flow when the damper above the firebox is closed. This is my first try at building a smoker and I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

The theory is good.  The problem you will find (and you certainly may find a solution) is that the vertical section will get too hot even with the damper shut.  When we install vertical warming boxes on reverse flow units we end up putting two inches of insulation between the firebox and the vertical box to keep it from becoming a pizza oven.

Thanks for your input. I am new to the smoker building process and was trying something a little differant. I may stick to a more conventional build for my first one.
