Sand vs water in the sand pan

With my propane smoker I use sandbox sand in the water pan instead water and it works really well, Can I do the same with the electrical smoker?

I have not tried the sand but i have tried lava rock like what u put in a grill... It works really well icon14.gif

Why not. I don't have an electric, but have used sand in my charcoal and propane units with great success.

 It is not something you need to use all the time. I find in the colder months it does give you more consistent and higher temps than water, which will evaporate over time. Sand will not. Sand also can be reused several times, as long as you put a sheet of foil across the top and remoisten the sand for the next smoke. During the summer months, I tend to come back to water in the pan.

I guess I'll have to give it a try & see what I think.

 

Do you ever have to add moisture to the sand during a long smoke?

 Well first, as to moisture in general, the water in the pan does add some moisture, but very little. I do tend to spritz a tad more when using sand. As to the sand itself, no I pretty much leave it alone until the next time I go to use it.
