Hickory Pellets, how to keep from firing.

I have a small propane smoker with fuel pan.  I have been using wood chips and while I have had success, it gets expensive.  I purchased hickory wood pellets and I had a heck of a flame up.  What are other experience with pellets?  Thanks.

just a thought...try wrapping your pallets in a double layer of tin foil and poke a few holes in the foil..with less air getting to them they may not "flame out" on you.

You have to keep the oxygen out of the mix and you'll get smoke and not fire.

Also, try placing your smoke box adjaceent to the flame instead of on top of it.  This way you get less heat.

Have you tried chunks?

 

They smoke for a couple of hours & are not expensive.

Chunks are the way to go, thats all I use now after convincing BPS to carry more than mesquite and hickory, now they have apple and oak, pecan I get elsewhere's.
