So I got my egg fired up this morning. There was a slight learning curve for me but I got her figured out now. At first I couldn't keep the temps down under 350F, then I realized I'm an idiot an didn't have the place setter in. Once I put that in I am now able to manage a temp around 230F. The Temp gauge on the egg tells me I'm closer to 250F but that gauge is at the top of the dome where my probe is actually on the grate, so I'm going by my probe.

I decided to start with something easy so I got a small 5lbs Boston Butt w/bone in. I laid her on the rack around 9:10am EST and right now at 10:15 am the meat is at 77F and the rack temp is hovering a little under 230 @ 226. My dome gauge is reading 250F but again I'm going by my temp probe on the rack. As long as she hovers around 230F give or take a couple I'm not going to mess with it.

I do apologize to you all that I did not get any prep pics for Q-view, but don't worry I will get pics as I go from now on. :)

Here is one pic, sorry its a cellphone pic so the quality kinda sucks. Left shelf is my transmitter for my Maverick ET-732 and right shelf is my delicious coffee which later this afternoon might be replaced by an ice cold beer.

Just in case anyone was interested I thought I would post an update.

@ 12:15pm EST the shoulder has been on for 3 hours now. We are still hanging consistent temps of 230F give or take. It did get up toward 240 but I got her back down. That temp spike may have been the result of the sun coming over the trees, not sure. The meat is at 145F IT at this point.

So far I amin love with this thing. I am so much more relaxed than I ever was on my old Brinkman. That thing I had to baby sit and correct every hour or two.

I have to say this is my best gift ever. Received it from my wonder bride to be as a wedding gift. She's the best.

Well must go make lunch

Don't beat yourself up.  It usually takes me about a year to feel comfortable with a new grill or smoker.

Good luck and good smoking.

I would like to have one of those Eggs but I will have to wait till my next life time...Good Luck and Happy Smoking !!!!

Well here is the final update.

My 5lbs Boston Butt took just overr 8 hrs to reach 200F. It went on the smoker at 9:10am EST and came off at 5:20ish PM EST.

I just can't believe how hassel free this egg is. Once this sucker is set, its set! I forsee some overnight brisket smoking in my future. My old brinkman vertical smoker was a constant baby sitting job. I actually went out to double check things a few times just out of habit and disbelief... lol

Anyway the shoulder turned out awesome! I didn't have any prep pics but I do have a few of the final product.

This is right before we wrapped in foil @ 165F

And we're pulling. The tools I'm using are called bear claws which are awesome, sure beats a fork.

Looks fantastic....how was the taste?  (I'm sure as good as it looks).  You and a few others here are making me want one a BGE!

Awesome first smoke on the BGE! I know exactly what you are saying about the "disbelief" thing. Once you get these puppies dialed in, it's on. I almost feel guilty for producing such quality meat with so little effort. Okay that was a big fat lie.

It's my pleasure to share.

There will be more posts to come. Now that I have the egg I will be smoking year round. I'm planning some baby backs next, just waiting to find them on sale. The best price I'm finding on those suckers is $3.99 at the local super market. I would do those today if I could. :grilling_smilie:

$3.99 would be a real good price around here for BBs. Right now ours are their usual price:

$2.49 for Pork spares.

$5.29 for Baby Backs.   (Ouch!)

Ouch indeed!

Now the actual neiborhood butcher shop is charging $5.99 per pound. I'm thinking they can't be THAT much better than the supermarket.

Ceramic cookers for the win. I love the fact I can set it and go to bed for 8hrs and not stress about it. Since you have the bug now, Go crab yourself a nice pizza stone and Dutch oven. Pizza, breads, and stews make winters go by fast in BGE
