Ok UDS builders, have any of you encountered any galvanized barrels??  I did a burnout on mine today and ashes were still smoldering when I came in, I noticed some gray galvanized looking pattern on the metal where the paint had peeled off, and couldn't tell if it was primer, or galvanizing.  Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

Thanks

Aaron

If it was galv and it burned,

It would show up as a fluffy white powdery looking stuff. Like nasty white fluff cob webs.

When it was burning it would also have made a snap crackle pop and sizzle. Along with green smoke.

I bet what you have is the imfamus barrel liner.

You might try hitting it with some comet cleaner and see what happens.

Never done it myself, but I hear that after burning a lined barrel, the residue comes right off with comet. A grinder has to work at getting it off but the comet wipes it away.

Sorry should have clarified that a little, the gray is on the outside, underneath where the paint has peeled away from getting hot.  The barrel is an old paint primer barrel, so it had dried paint on the inside and it is now very "carbony" black on the inside, so I can't tell what is on the inside yet.  Do you think two burnouts with cedar and hedge would have gotten hot enough to burn off any galvanizing.

I will try to post pics later if I can get out there to take some.

Thanks

Aaron

I say get some pics up, that would help. I'd personally stay away from galvanized. Both of mine were new food grade steel barrels.

I will have to vote that you more then likely got it plenty hot.

I would see what will clean off with a hand held wire brush first.

Next I would use the comet.

Then if I could scratch the surface and it appeared to be more layers then I would punt.

I weld a fair amount of galv, and its bad stuff if you don't keep your head out of the fumes.

But, heres what gets me.

If you google, trash can smoker.

They have post showing where guys take a galv trash can straight from the store and build a fire and cook away.

In a perfect smoking world, we get no where near hot enough to vaporize the galv but still. WHAT IF.

Like said above. Pics would help us offer better advise.

Ok here are some pics.  The top one shoes this the best, you can see the white paint of the barrel, then the silvery-gray, and then the bare barrel.  The other pics are supposed to show the same thing, but did not com out as well.  Only had my cell phone, so hope this helps.  So far this is all on the outside, but I have had a chance to take a wire wheel to the inside.
