i have a self built smoker , for the past few years i have just used  RO lump for the heat  source,... i am doing a brisket tomorrow night

and have a nice wood pile of split oak that i was thinking of using for heat/flavor, my question is how do i go about starting and adding wood during the time with out getting the great big white clouds of smoke do i need to have a second fire going and only add hot coals from that?????????

The idea is to get rid of the white smoke quickly.  I find that using smaller splits and adding them to a hot fire burns the bad stuff quickly.  Sometimes a smaller, hotter fire is better then a large cooler fire.  You should also use well dried wood.  Good luck, you may consider starting with the charcoal and adding the wood once the fire gets built.
