So I am refinishing my dads LifeTyme BBQ that has been setting out in the weather at my brothers house.  It wasn't covered and has seen it's better day. After much sanding and repainting and seasoning it, I felt it was time to really season it.

Soooo.Head of Elephant Garlic, Three racks of spares, four pork cushions (small roasts) and some Ricks Baked Beans were going to break this thing in.

Smoked with Cherry and Hickory for 6 hours then foiled for 1 1/2

This doesn't showbut it had a great smoke ring on it.

It pulled very easy and tasted great.

We were able to feed five families today, delivered to two of them and had members of two others over for dinner.  All in all long day but worth it.  (never did get to eat the garlic we were too stuffed)

Thanks for coming by.

It looks awesome and I'm sure tasted even better

I wobbled over to the laptop out of my food coma and tried to type "thank you" but I have to stretch to the reach the keyboard. Not really, just kidding.

But seriously, thanks for the kind words.

I missed this...

Looks great and congrats on the carousel!!

I didn't get a lot of before's so I will show you what I do have.

So I started out my firing it up and drying it out. It also helped in removing caked on fat that hadn't been cleaned out in a couple years. ( I am not happy about the treatment this poor thing was given.)  So I burned and power washed it out.

This is the top of the firebox.  It is a warming plate. It was flaking off. It took me about an hour to finally get this cleaned up. I think it was the other paint and surface rust.

This is the cook chamber after about half an hour with a sanding wheel.  I went a bought a paddle disk for my 4" grinder and was able to get the rust spots out. Then went over the rest of the whole thing to take off oxidation.  Almost a whole day sanding and grinding away...till the grinder seized and began the demonstration of its smoke feature...I think it was jealous of the attention the smoker was getting.

So, I painted it Saturday and let it dry in the brief warm dry weather we had.  Sunday church and then came Monday.  Here are some better after shots.  It has been raining all week so it is wet.

So this is the same spot that had bad sanding marks on it.  I think it turned out ok.  The good thing is Dad isn't ready for it so I might have to do my brisket this weekend in it.  Just to season it though.  Nice unit.  I think when the time comes the same brother is going to get it back. (sigh).

Ok, hope this does it some justice.

Good looking Food and props to you for the refurbish. I have a soft pot for breathing new life back into old things, especially when they have a story with them. I would say you keep it when your dads done with it and look around the garage sale/Craig's list circuit and pick up your brother a well used brinkman. Sweat equity is priceless, GREAT JOB!  Thanks for sharing.

Funny thing is he had it for almost 10 years and NEVER used it to smoke, just grill burger.  Doesn't listen to little brother, so it goes...I will enjoy it while I can.
