new smoker

Need a new smoker and was looking at the 40" Masterbuilt that Sams has.  I read a lot of good things on here but wondering what its like going from a GOSM to an electric smoker?  I loved my GOSM but it took a real beating this winter, got blown across the yard a few times and banged up pretty bad and now has a robin nest in it.  Was just going to get another GOSM but after reading about the Masterbuilt might go with that.  Any opinoins or pros and cons of each?

They are both good smokers. It depends if you want electric or gas. I have never had a gas smoker, but I did own a MES 40 and have nothing but good things to say about it. If you get an A-MAZE-N smoker with it, it's really hard to beat.

What is the A-MAZE-N smoker and what do you need it for?

The A-MAZE-N smoker is a little device that eliminates the need to add chips every 30-45 minutes. It will produce continuous smoke for 6-8 hours without refilling it.

Check it out at http://www.amazenproducts.com/

I have a Char Griller and a WSM. I must say that the MES40 surprised me even without the A-Maze-N. Got that for cold smoking but it is handy if you do not want to feed chips into the MES40 every 30 minutes or so. I like the MES when i am feeling lazy and want smoked food without the tending of charcoal.

Thanks a lot guys.  Pretty sure I'll go with the 40" MES now.  Just wasnt sure about making the switch from propane to electric.

Picked electric cause I always have it as long as I pay my bill and propane I got to get refills for!

I picked electric because I have a huge solar array and I smoke off the sun! Wish I went with the 40 although my 30 is making me very happy. I have a load of country ribs in it right now smoking on arborvitae wood. Great site! I'm a newbie and will be annoying you all as much as I can with stupid questoins as I get time.

I don't know about using Arborvitae wood for smoking.

I think that's in the Cedar family, which is needle bearing, as in Pine , Spruce, etc. All not normally used for smoking.

Might have a lot of pitch & tar in it.

I make sure to dry and season it well. It has to be well dried. Try it and let me know what you think. I have a lot of fans for it around here.
