Looking good Joel. Might want to take a few days off of work to work on this thing.
We all took the week off before the festival. Time may get tight but we should be able to pull it off.

WOW!!!

Great job!  Love the idea of the log pre-heating area!

SOB

Thanks SOB! It has been a journey to say the least. lol

Awesome build!  I cant believe how cheap you got by on for materials.  I had almost $650 in my build (RF 80g tank,  1/4" 20x20 firebox & plate).  Of course I bought some extra and let my brother have it for letting me use his garage for 2 months haha.  It was heavier than I thought by the time I got done.  Front loader on the tractor would barely lift it in the truck, thought i was gonna have to use the backhoe to get it set in the backyard.  Now if I could only get caught up on the hours of cooking time its seen vs. hours it took to build it, all would be well!

Thanks! We got very lucky with finding good scrap metal at a great price. Although I suppose that is about to change since we have been unsuccessful in finding 4 or 5" C channel for the trailer. As of today, we have $1500 in materials into it.

I just took a look at your build and it is very nice. Hopefully you will get to see lots more cooking time on it and soon. :o)

Looks like the Ospho has been hard at work. That or some very aggressive pigeons.

3 gallons of Thurmalox flat black got ordered yesterday as well.

Total cost is now around $1700.

Maybe your weather people are off on the prediction and you can still get some paint on it.
Here in Kansas City, they can't seem to get the afternoon weather right that they forcast in the morning.

Looking great so far. Can't wait to see some paint.

When and where is this festival?

Looks like the hurricane might not be that big of a deal after all and skirt by us.

Get a pop up or 2 over that monster
One barely covers it.

Got a lead on 500' of 5" C channel for the trailer. He has both 1/4" and 3/8" thicknesses. I am gonna go pick some up tomorrow night.10 pieces ought to do it.

We are ever so much closer now. Last week we picked up 10 pieces of 14' long 5" channel to start on the trailer. So we started to lay things out for the frame. Here are our $100 axles.

Working on laying out the frame.

A nice shot of the channel.

The beginnings of the frame are squared up and level.

Getting our counterweights worked out. The metal alone wasn't enough so we packed em with sand.

And then today it was on to paint. We were going to spray it but some dumbass forgot to order thinner so we broke out the brushes.

Thurmalox 270 went on pretty easy and dried to the touch very quickly.

We got two coats out of just a little more than a gallon of the stuff.

And the three B's on each chimney got orange engine enamel.

Next weekend is our first cook on the smoker and hopefully we can manage to get some trailer work in as well.

It's really L@@KING AWESOME!

I'm so jealous, because I really want to open a BBQ restaurant and that cooker would keep up with a BIG crowd.

I liked your idea of wanting to be able to accommodate a whole hog and making the inner top racks and frames removeable.  You may have already addressed this, but I was wondering if you'd thought about the outside middle door frame being in the way, especially after it's cooked, trying to remove the whole hog?  Are you going to build a full length tray to cook the hog on that would allow you to put it in and remove it at an angle through one opening?

Be sure to have someone take plenty of pictures of the event.  If I'm not working at the fire station the day of the event, I may try to attend.  What kind of things will be there?  Is it just a craft show?

Great job!

Bobby

Great work. You will have yourself one fine cooker when you are finished. Looking forward to seeing more updates

Thanks Gunny! Thankfully there aren't too many more updates to go.

looking really good guys, wish I could come up

I have thought about it but I think we will be able to manage with it intact. If not, we will cut it and hinge it. I was worried about the middle sagging without it. I have thought about the tray for whole hog but I think I am gonna hold off on that until we actually do one.

I have never been to the Black Walnut festival before so I am not sure what is going on there. I do know Foothills Brewery will be right next to us so if nothing else you can get some great beer and Q without having to go far.

Dang!  I just checked my schedule and I'm working at the fire station on the 24th.  That's also the weekend before we go to Disney for 2 weeks, so my vacation is about shot.  Be sure to take lot's of pics!
