Rescued Smoker

Here is the smoker I pulled from a friend's yard and saved. It's amazing what a little vinegar and salt will do to clean a a grill, even when it's been left out to absorb rain and humidity. Only been used a few times from what I know and even better that it was "Free-Fifty-Free".

Planning on Curing it in the next few days and inaugurating it with some ribs this weekend. If I hang them from the meat hooks instead of using the Rib Racks do you think that they'll end up falling off?  I just think that it would be a lot cooler to open up the door and see a couple of rib racks cooking while hanging from meat hooks.

Great score.. as far as the meat hooks and hanging the ribs i don't think i would do it. There is a big risk of them falling off.. Good luck and happy smoking

Makin Bacon, looks like you scored a home run and now I know what to tell my Dad to clean his little stove up with, vinegar and salt!  Keep us posted and please don't forget the Q-View!

You might want to check out the FREE E-Course on Smoking Meat that is offered, it's great, I had been smoking meat about 6 years when I got it and I learned a ton of stuff, things I had never even thought about in that one 5 day e-course and it's free too.  You can find lots of material using the search bar near the top of the page it is jam packed with information on everything you could ever think of.  The WIKI section is also a great place to find information.  If you take the E-Course you will sure want to use Search and WIKI sections. OH, Makin Bacon, the only dumb question that you can ask here......is the one you do not ask!  Good luck and keep us posted!!!

nice score!

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. Congrats on that great score of a nice smoker. You'll find lots of good info and some great recipes here. Personally I wouldn't hang the ribs they may very well fall off but since it has rib racks I would use them. If your doing Spare Ribs I would do the 3-2-1 method if you are doing Baby Backs then try the 2-2-1 method. Have fun and happy smoking

Congrats on the new smoker. That one'll teach you a lot about building and maintaining a fire. Once you get the hang of it, I'm sure you'll love it. Make sure to use the search tool to check out the mods for that unit. Some of them are critical for maintaining your temps. Happy smoking!

Awesome job of cleaning that thing up !!!!!!!!!!!

I would want mine to fall off hangers, so I would not hang mine.

Wait until you get around to smoking Bacon & Sausage---Then you can hang some good stuff.

Wow. Nice score. Nice price. What they all said. With a name like Makin Bacon and that smoker. You could make some serious bacon. You may want to buy an AMNS. It would work real nice in there for bacon. Listen to these folks here and you'll be using that to its full potential in no time.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I hadn't even realized that the thread was active since it was held for being a newbie at first. I could imagine the rib hanging idea being a bad one, but I was just all pumped up about those meat hooks...to be honest I haven't even wanted to work these past few days because all I can think about is BBQ!

I'm going to make sure and take some pics off all use of this beast, but is there a particular area I should post them at? I'm also definitely going to take a look at those e-courses.  Again, thanks a lot and Happy BBQ'ing!
