I'm wondering if an electric element from a Brinkmann Gourmet Electric smoker can be adapted to a side box in this fashion. I love the consistent temperatures from the electric, but i hate the lack of real estate, I can't fit a decent sized beef brisket in this....
Well I tried it again...This time with two handful of lump charcoal and it worked like a charm..Would stay steady at 25o to 225 for a couple hrs before i would have to reload. Saved on using just lump. Did a 15lb brisket On my Brinkmann Trailmaster Limited Edition for 19hrs + 1 in the cooler. Came out perfect.

Cool idea. I just got a Brinkmann Trailmaster LE. Bought it to mod it. I'm going to try and mod it out in a week or two.

I have been considering doing something similar. I was considering using an amns in the cooking chamber for smoke and the propane just for heat. Any thoughts?

Z, afternoon....    If the smoke has to travel through the fire from the burner, it will be consumed.... no smoke....

Please take a moment and stop into " /Roll Call/   " and introduce yourself and get a proper welcome from our members.... Also, if you would note your location in your profile, it will help in the future when answering questions about smokin'...   elevation, humidity etc....

We're glad you stopped in and joined our group...    Enjoy the long smokey ride....     Dave

Sorry I didn't explain that all that great. It is a side fire box smoker. I would put the propane in the fire box and the amns in the cook chamber. So the smoke wouldn't be near the fire. I'll stop by roll call. Thanks for the welcome.

I added a turkey fryer burner to my firebox and use a 10" Iron skillet to place the wood in. I had to constantly fight my smoker for consistent temps and now I can set it and forget it.

This is the ticket!!! My burner's a little different & I have a 100 lb propane tank with a longer hose. I also moved lava rock from firebox to cook chamber to hold heat in cook instead of trap in firebox.

As well as this worked I have not really used it since I came across a smoking deal on a insulated aluminum widebody gsm upright. I just needed more surface area than the offset could provide. This has really just been collecting dust since then and I think I may post it on craigslist.
