Ready to start Smoking

Hey everyone, been burning charcoal for the last few years on my Weber Grill and love it, but it has its limitations for feeding larger groups of people. Now i'm ready for something more. I stumbled across this site and found lots of good info.

I've started doing some research on smokers, I was looking at getting a Char-griller smoking pro to start out but I think I would like the challenge and cost savings of building my own. I like to design and fab as a hobby so a small offset firebox smoker seems like a good project.

I am in the process of sourcing (scrounging) some tanks to use as the fire box and smoke chamber. I found a 7 gallon air pig that I am considering using as fire box; I might be able to get a 18 gallon steel drum to use as the cooking chamber for free, if not I found a 21 gallon air tank for sale that would also work just a little more cost involved. Both would give me and would give me approximately the proper proportions but i'm looking to keep costs down so the free option is looking to best to me.

Still a little bit of research to do and a little designing to but looking forward to getting started.

Welcome to SMF. There are a lot of very friendly & knowledgeable folks here to help you. I urge you to sign up for the free E-course. It will give you the basics, & even if you are an experienced smoker you may learn something new. Then start asking questions. Good luck & glad to have you aboard. Don't forget we all love Qview! Good luck with that build, would like to build one someday myself.

First off welcome Led Head to SMF. I have to agree with your Man Law.  You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview

here. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to post your Qview so we can see what your doing.

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

Welcome to Your New Addiction

Well i'm off to a good start, Signed up for the 5 day e-course. Decided i'm going to build a RF side firebox smoker.

Did some running around this weekend picking up parts and materials to start my build. Ended up getting a 21 gal. air tank and 7 gal. air pig

And now for a qview, dug the old Weber out of the snow this afternoon, Had some Pork side ribs that had the centers removed, trimmed them up, put a Jerk rub on half of them, and made my first ABT's.
