New guy and a couple of Lang questions

Hey guys, great site here.  I am new to smoking but am a grilling fanatic.   I have always wanted to get into BBQ and am thinking of getting a Lang, the 84deluxe.  Just a few questions for some of the owners out there.  I see that the bottom shelf does not slide out, would you recommend me getting the mod to do so?  Also, has anyone seen a cover made for the 84 d. I have to keep in outside for right now and want to keep it out of the elements the best I can.  ANyway, i am glad to see that there are alot of Lang owners on this site.  I will keep you posted on my bbq journey.  Thanks!

Ben doesn't offer a cover for the Langs but he does offer the option of a slide out rack for the top or bottom shelf. That's an option that you have to request at the time you place your order-you won't find that option listed on his web site.

 

You should be able to have a cover made locally by a company that specializes in custom boat covers.

 First off welcome to SMF. Most folks here that have Lang smokers just park them in thier living rooms. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

I am currently waiting on delivery of a Lang 36.  I made the decision to not ask for the slide out racks because the rails will have to be welded in and may pose a problem when loading turkeys or large hams.  This may not be an issue on the 84 but I decided to leave the upper rack as designed.

 

The people at Lang are very helpful and I am sure they will do whatever they can to build the smoker you will be happy with. 

 

Take a good look at the covers you are interested in.  The pits are painted with high temperature paint.  I would think that in some environments you will get as much rust from trapping all the humidity between the steel and the cover then just letting it dry out real well after a good rain.  There again Ben can give you better advice then I can.

I have a Lang 84 Deluxe and mine has had both grates made to slide. Its real handy for the top one to slide but don't know that it's really needed for the bottom grate. The 84 has doors on both sides so it's not that hard to reach everything

Thanks pineywoods.  I am trying to weigh out whether or not to get it.  Just seems like it would be nice to have.  How is the 84 running for you?

Buck, Just order the Lang if you have the $$. Then all you have to worry about is filling it up with meat to smoke.
