Great first smoker

Posted

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cumbersome when using multiple levels, door access, water access.

Great first gas smoker (never tried charcoal) if you don't want to spend a lot of money up front. Gets a little cumbersome if you are using more than 1 level. Whole racks will only fit if you roll them (3 will fit rolled). The access to the chip tray is REALLY tight. Best thing to do is move the water bowl to the bottom rack and buy a cheap 3rd rack to still have 2 levels. This way it's much easier to put in chips or even chunks, which will not fit with the water bowl left where they say to have it.  If you are patient and keep looking you can find it for ~$100 on Target or Amazon.

So far I love it,

Pros: It does everything well and easy.

Cons: Could be mad a little better.

I love this thing. I have never used a smoker before but I have been bbqing my whole life. Smoking is my new hobby and so far this has made a great entry level smoker. I have made pulled pork from  a pork but and a few smoked pork loins. Despite my lack of skill or experience at smoking I have found between this forum and the ease of use of this smoker combined with my maverick temp. probe everything has just been easy. Despite a few bumps everything I've made has tasted great . The water bowl gets in the way when adding wood chips and is hard to refill mid cook but is doable. I also saw a mod to fix this issue on here and I will try it. I may add one or 2 more vents myself for...

Pros: Price. Grill and smoke. Durability. Portability

Cons: Porcelain one rusted out after 3 years.

Great smoker/grill for the small family. Used the original one (porcelain) we bought for 2 in the house to grill and smoke.  If you are going to buy this I highly recommend getting the stainless steal one.  When the porcelain one rusted through I bought the Stainless and it has been awesome. Well used and smoking a Chuckie and a Pastrami as I type!  Travels well, and has actually done an overnight rafting trip.  Smoked trout was awesome!

7-1 smoker

Pros: reasonable priced

Cons: nothing so far

Have been using this, my first smoker, since last year.  Has been fun and easy to learn to smoke meats, have not been disappointed in the ease of use.  Have smoked just about anything and other than a wild turkey breast, everything has tasted super!  Have used the propane twice for finishing the cooking of a turkey and a pork roast.  temp easy to control as long as you stay on top of it, the electric starter not the best but the gas was easy to start using a long lighter.  For a newbie as myself it's everything I need and want.  Will be brining and smoking my first turkey this week, wish me luck!

Pros: keeps very good even heat, with propane or lump charcoal

Cons: door is too small to add wood or charcoal, get a better themometer

While I admit I am a newbie, I have used this grill 3 times so far (Ribs, Butt, brisket, and chicken) All have turned out very good with no fuss. While using the propane it has been a set it and forget it, other than adding chips. Using lump charcoal it burned very even and stayed in the 200 to 250 range. all in all I am delighted with my purchase, and so are my neighbors who keep getting to come over and sample my newest creation lol
