Good budget smoker

Posted

Pros: Large cooking area, easy on the wallet

Cons: Lots of mods needed to work effectively, thin gauge metal, bottom shelf cannot hold much weight, poor grease managment

This smoker was my first smoker when I started several years ago.  I got interested in smoking after having Thanksgiving at a colleague's house where he served Turkey cooked on his Treager.  I loved the taste and wanted to dip my toe in the smoky waters.  I was not about to drop over a thousand on a Treager to start out.  After shopping around (and not at the time knowing there are a lot of great smokers not in the big box retail market) I went with the Smokin' pro.   Out of the box I had very inconsistent temperatures across the smoker, inadequate space for the charcoal or wood to burn before ash became an issue, and a difficult time controlling the heat level....

Good Value

Pros: Versatile

Cons: High Maintanance

I enjoy this grill/smoker.  I originally bought just the grill without the side firebox but after reading more about grilling I realized I wanted to smoke more than grill so I made the purchase of the side firebox.  I struggled with maintaining temperatures on the thing but some of it was weather related as I now realize.  You have to make mods to the unit to maximize its potential so plan on about $50-$100 worth of costs and a few hours of time to mod it.  That being said, for $250 with mods this is a good sized smoker/grill making it a great value.  Some of the changes are extending the stack, adding thermometers (as the one with it...

Char Griller w/ smoke box

Posted

Pros: low temp slow cooking & huge grilling area

Cons: i cant walk past it with out smilling smoked meat and wanting to stick my face inside it.

I did a bit of research b4 i got this grill.  The rotisserie won't attach with the fire box on the side, which is some thing i couldn't find out untill i was home and setting it up.  This is a great medium size smoker.  Lots of grill space, and the smoker box makes for easy slow and long smoked meals, as well as a hot grill side.  I got mine at Low es, and got a real good price on it, and the fire box attachment.  I've only been smoking for about 2 years now, but LOVE IT, and so does my family.  I can even get a pretty good smoke in my Webber now. =)
