Wood Smoker Build

Discussion in 'Other Builds' started by lamajo25, Sep 10, 2008.

  1. Now I know some people have expressed their concerns with a rear mounted fire box. The plans I got for my smoker came from online and I've decided that this setup will work best for the tanks I got.

I'm keeping a running tally for the amount that this build is gonna cost me in the end. I can tell you right now I'm $50.00 over what my Wal-Mart smoker cost me. I've had lots of items donated to me to include a large amount of steel. Well here's some pictures hopefully you guys enjoy.

The smaller one is the firebox and with teh size and shape it's best being a back burner. I'm gonna put a big baffle inside to keep it from getting too hot in one place. Big tank is 8' long and smaller one is close to 4'.

Once removed I purged all the leftover gas and Methyl-Mercaptan oil that built up over the 60 years this tank was in service. That's another story.

Top was mapped out and ready to cut.

Had to go out of town to cut it per Firemarshal Bob. The firefighters here have no sense of adventure. I've been a certified firefighter and the guy cutting in this picture is also. Research did me well.

Once cut open we took it to my sergeant's property and burned it for 12 hours. Well over 500* inside and will get a second seasoning burn once done.

  2. Got the doors mapped out and ready to cut.

Was getting little to nowhere with the grinder and have a great friend at an auto shop. Loaned me the torch and got the cutting done quickly. I know the grinder would have been cleaner cuts but this a lot faster.

Cut the hotbox door open after I got the big tank doors open.

    Not too bad of cuts.

You can see the ash from burning the interior the other day pouring out the bottom of the tank where the doors are.

I have some more pictures I just have to upload them to the computer.

lamajo, I'm having trouble seeing the pictures....could just be my computer though.
    Sounds nice. :)

  4. Here's the doors open. I was doing some grinding on the cuts to clean them up.

That'd be me and I'm only filling half the tank at my feet. I go about 4 inches past the center beam.

Well there will be more to come later but today is a work day and I won't get back to work on it until Monday next week. The wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary this Saturday and will be out of town until Sunday afternoon.

If anyone has any ideas that would help I'd greatly appreciate it. I've already borrowed the burn barrel idea and just happened to have a 55g drum that's been empty for years in the shed.

  6. Sorry I had to break down and use photobucket. I've got all these pictures on my Kodak gallery and was working when I was uploading them but it wouldn't work once I finished. They should be there now.

WOW thats a big tank, sitting next to the basketball post really put it in perspective. looks nice though. even though your going to spend around 2 times your walmart smoker, you'd need at least 3 (of anything they carry at my walmart) to smoke what you can fit in that monster.

  15. Sorry everyone, I haven't done any work on this thing. It's been a busy week and I have training all week. I've been learning (self teaching with some assistance from a good friend) to weld as I've never done it before. I forgot to post the pics of the burn barrel but will do so as soon as I can.

I'll be working on it some this Tuesday as my training is Sunday and Monday this week. I'll get back to it asap.

That looks good. I wish I could find some donations like that. I want some tanks like yours also...[IMG]

I know where another buried one is and I plan to dig it up this fall. I think I'll build a double trailer smoker if it looks good.[IMG]

  17. Well here's an update. I took a break from welding today to post some things really quick. I'm at a point where my friend that welds well has to complete the last bead in an awkward (not sure if thats spelled right) position. It's almost ready to mount on the trailer. Heres some pictures though.

Well heres the Trailer. $50.00 for it.

The welder courtesy of my good buddy Manny. I'm getting my own for $50.00 from another friend because he doesn't want it anymore.

This is my welding shirt. I've had it since highschool and decided I needed to do something with it.

Kinda blurry but that was my first really decent weld. Mind you guys I've never welded before this.

Heres the beginning of the weld on the firebox and channel.

Here's the firebox with the channel attached compeletly.

Thats six pictures so I've gotta add two more pics on the next one.

  18. Okay, last two pics for now.

A buddy of mine and me put it up top and tacked it in place last night and I got up and started welding. The firebox looks a bit burnt because we used it to keep warm last night while bbq'ing. It was still hot this morning and I had to clean it out.

Well here it is attached. I got most of the welds done by this time and was glad to get it attached. One more weld and some clean up and it's ready to put on the trailer.

Hope you all enjoyed these. I'll put more on when I get some more done.
