I've been using a MES30 (30" electric smoker from Masterbuilt for those that aren't in the know) for years now w/mixed results and had always been jealous of my buddy's and their pellet smokers that did stuff I just couldn't do.  Sure, I made some really, really, REALLY good meat with my smoker but it seemed to take more effort to do than their higher end pellet smokers.  I'm so excited to get this puppy set up and the initial burn-in done so I can start smoking on it!  Our local grocery store started a sale on their Boston Butt's and I was able to score a smaller shoulder for less than $8 @ the current $0.99//lb sale price.  That will be the first thing to go on after I do the 1hr burn-in.  I expect it to get better as it gets seasoned but I'm pretty amped for this first smoke as I have lots of experience w/pulled pork so it will be a good test to compare the two smokers.  I got a cover for it when not in use and would have got the insulation wrap for it (it's currently about 30deg here in Colorado as I type this) but they were out of stock.  I got three bags of the GMG pellets and plan to use the fruity wood mixture for the shoulder as I normally like to run applewood pellets for my pulled pork and I think this fruit mixture is their closest version.

Man, this is going to get FUN!

Sounds like a great gift, heck I have to pay for my bday dinner even.

Ha!  Thanks everyone!  She's a keeper for sure.  Just celebrated our 10yr wedding anniversary and have been together over half of our lives so I like to think I'm a keeper too.  lulz.

I just realized I forgot to post up a pic even though I'm sure everyone here knows what they look like...

It's supposed to hit the mid 50's the next couple of days so tomorrow I plan to get it all set up, burned in and seasoned and the first smoke will be that Boston Butt within the following 24hrs.  I excite!  /Borat

After last weekend, smoking for my boys Birthday party, while having the flu, I'm thinking more and more I'd sure like a pellet grill!

Yes, I'm very jealous!

Scored a thermal blanket for it today for $45! One of the Ace Hardware employees drug a box cutter across it to the tune of about 5" during unboxing. They did a pretty good job w/super glue plus it's on the back panel so you can't see it once installed if I back it to the house which is where my old smoker was. w00t!

Congrats ! I've had a GMG DB for over 2 yrs now & enjoy it a lot. It's a great smoker... Have fun & can't wait for some Q view !

I can't wait to start posting some Q-Views with this bad boy!  It'll be nice to have an actual smoke ring now instead of constantly explaining to my buddies why it wasn't a big deal that my electric smoker couldn't make them.  lol

I'm reading a lot about these smokers having a hot spot on the right side of the grill and now I'm seeing that there's versions of heat shields that are addressing this issue.  The videos I've seen have a three-piece design with a larger square piece in the center and then two triangular panel side wings that angle downwards.  I see that newer models now have a larger rectangular stainless steel heat shield and this was causing higher temps on the right side and that there's an even newer version of this that allows for you to slide it one side or the other.  Can someone tell me which I have and what I need so that I don't have heat variances?

Thanks!

I think that the newest version has four notches on the bottom instead of two so you can shift it one way or the other?  Looks like mine has only two making it the newer but not newest one that is causing heat variances?

My wife got me the same gift, picked it up Saturday and I got the same parts, and the single set of notches. The dealer had just gotten the shipment in, so these should be the newest, but I have read about the double notch as well so you have me curious.

Mine doesn't have a double notch, but i can slide my heat shield a inch or so either way.
Can't tell from that pic what that notch looks like. All i can see is the circular cut out so it can sit on the auger tube.

Here are a few pics from my GMG DB, which just came into the dealer the day before I bought it on 3/31. There is not much "extra" width for my gaps to be able to move the shield considerably. It does appear to be firing right down the middle of the split though judging by the burn marks. So, is this the "newest" version, or what? The firmware that came on mine was 5.8.

Whats the build date? It on the back of the hopper on a green tag. Think my slot is bigger. Ill measure mine later. I belive the current firmware is 6.1.

Had a pic I took of the S/N so I just checked. Interesting, mine shows the date as 07/2015 even though it was shipped to my dealer 3/31 and has the stainless 2-piece grease tray. Maybe it's a mashup of old and new parts?

I got mine last Oct, and it has a build date of 6/14..
I think there were two versions of the SS heat shield. Ill be home soon and ill look at mine.

Ok, i just looked at my heat shield. This was sent to me in February. My slot is 3 7/16.

I've read on other sights where some were making the notch larger to slide the shield farther to the right to even out the left to right temps.
I do run mine all the way to the right, and I'm liking it so far.

I didn't measure mine but curious how much larger the slot is than the centering piece on the grill, my slot certainly didn't look to be that long. Might have to contact GMG and get clarification as to the different versions of these things. I still have yet to test for any variation in temps on the grill, how are ppl checking those? With a multi-probe thermometer or IR gun or what? Obviously I'm new to all of this but it just seems that the adjustment is to direct the flame toward the center of the "V", which mine looks to be firing right down the center. Also, looks like there are more holes in the top of the heat shield on the right side, is that the same on yours?
