I was at my local smart and final yesterday. They had a 13 pound Trip tip roast @2.99 a pound.

Has anyone smoked tri tip roast of this size like a brisket??? The brisket was 1.99 a pound so I picked up one of those.

If the tri tip would taste better than the brisket with the low and slow method smoking, meaning 1-1.5 hours per pound smoke at 225, is the trip tip a better cut?

thanks!

I did one about that size and it turned out real well but thebrisket turned out a lot better . Not as dry. I do know that the tip is usually a lot leaner than the brisket. It could have been my inexperience at smoking also.. I have built a lot more smokers than I have used.. Hemi..

If it was tri-tip and was in a cryo-pack bag. I would bet that there were multiple tri-tips in the bag. The first time i saw them packaged like this I was concerned about cooking a 12lb tri-tip.

Done many tri-tips, though most were in the 2-5 lb range. Simply rub with CBP, Kosher Salt, and garlic powder and fire away.

fyi - Tri-tips seem to cook a lot faster than other meats. Usually a 3lb tip only takes about 1.5-2 hours. Taste great with a mix of hickory and oak if ya got it.

I have smoked many beef roast and they do cook alot faster then like pork roast. The meat is alot dencer then say pork and there isn't as much connective tissue that you have to break down. So overal they take less time to smoke.
