Hi,

I have been wanting to smoke for a while and am really interested in picking this up. Problem is i live in an aprtment. They do allow propane grills on the balcony and i grill just fine with a 4 burner grill.

I have no information about smokers at all. As long as its not charcoal, im sure they will allow it. But question i have is how smoky will it be? Im afraid if it smokes too much then they might make a fuss. Since iv never used a smoker before, not sure if the smoker is nothing but heavy smoke or if its a nice and steady smoke that wont cause much problem?

Since i am new and in apartment, was thinking of getting one of the cheap brinkman or master forge smoker to start off with. Should i even bother?

Thanks a bunch!

you should take a look at meateater's awsome sparky, sounds like just what ya need

Thanks for the response. Im not really handy, so wouldnt even know where to start on something like that:(. i was thinking of something cheap/easy for now like the brinkman 810-7080. Still worried about the smoke level. Is the word "smoker" literal in that there will be lots and lots of smoke? or is it more mellow smoke that is like grilling?

Thanks again!

well if your not careful you can really make some smoke but if your using a electric smoker with some wood chips or a a-maze-n you will get a nice thin blue smoke that you should barly be able to see but smell great.

I would say it will be like grilling, if it is going like it should.

there is a few guys here that have the same rules you got and post up some awsome lookn "Q"

they should be by to help ya out!

oh,  and welcome to SMF you should swing over to roll call and get the awsome SMF welcome!

to the SMF. Great place to learn the smoking process.Keep reading and start with that is "no fail" as Chicken and small Pork Butts, otherwise you will give up and miss the greatest culinary delites around.IMHO,you should start with an elect. unit as they are less of a problem with fire as the Gas and Charcoal;and the chips and sawdust are good for the flavor profile.A little learning curve.but easy enough.

     Have fun and ...

Welcome aboard.  Billowing white smoke makes terrible BBQ!  If you are doing it right you should have no problems with a gas or electric unit.

Definitely look into the A-MAZE-N-SMOKER.  You will find it invaluable in creating Thin Blue Smoke and keeping you at peace with neighbors and the management.

Good luck and good smoking.

Welcome! I had that same rule in an apartment I lived in up

in Melbourne,Fl. I used an electric grill and never got a

complaint about the smoke, and there was lots. I didn't get

into smoking till just a few months ago...you're going to

like what you eat...I guarantee it.

As far as a smoker, jury's out till ya find out. I would definitely

stay with electric and get the a-maze-n. It would probably be a

good idea to ask the apt. mgr. Maybe promise them the first plate

or something.

Welcome to the club. Awesome group of guys with great knowledge here. Living in an apartment, I would think you would be just fine with a Masterbuilt 30" electric smoker. It resembles a small fridge, and will be just fine sitting on your deck with a cover when not in use. Best part about it,  you can smoke any and everything in it. At first I was skeptical about the Amazn smoker, but I highly recommend you pick one up as well. That little device does an awesome job, and will work with your Masterbuilt or any other smoker with no problems.

As you can tell I'm a new join myself, so definitely consider the MES electric smoker. At it's price point it should do the job and then some for you.

The reason I built the sparky was a neighbor behind me in my building set off the fire alarms, thought all hell broke loose one day coming home from work. Before that I used my charcoal UDS for over a year and no one really even noticed. Long story short I can get a fine of 1500.00 if caught using a propane or coal smoker or bbq. Electric is ok, I have it in writing. You can get a MES 30 or 40 and smoke some great food with it, I'm a mangy barrel smoker and that's just what I like personally.

I say get a MES and get to smoking, you won't be dissatisfied.

Meat has the best imitation of an electric UDS I have ever seen.

He must make the most perfect thin blue smoke to get away with it.

Check out the electrics, the gassers.  Mostly get the AMNS to keep the neighbors and the management quiet.

You should be fine.

Good luck and good smoking.

Thanks for the compliments but Dutch is the original Watt Burner in the round. I'm just mangy.

i use an MES 30 and it doesn't put out a lot of smoke just small whiffs of white smoke , i can't see how that would bother anyone.i also use the AMZNS , all that does is put out smoke for a longer period of time and remember , most people say the meat only takes smoke for the first 3 hrs or so
