Want to learn

  1. My name is Walt I love to barbque but haven't done any (1 time) food in a smoker. I have eaten food done in a smoker and liked it so much I went out and bought one. I bought one that runs on propane. It's called "Smoker Vault". Anyway I made a Boston Butt/ Pork and It was 8lbs. I cut it into two 4 lb pices and set the temp at 225 and cooked for 5 hours. It wasn't done so I put one in the oven for an hr. and continued to smoke the other for another hour and a half at 250. They both tasted ok but not quite where i had hoped they would be. I probably did a lot of things wrong but I want to learn the right way. I used apple wood chips in the chip tray and there was plenty of water in the water tray.

    You probably didn't cook those butts long enough.

    Chicken, sausuage & pork butts are good good items to start with.

    Keep at it. Half the fun is tinkering around with methods and recipes.

    Welcome. As others have said, take the 5 day course and read up on all the stickies and browse through the threads in general. And last but not least...practice makes perfect(though I will never say it is perfect just so I can smoke something else[​IMG]).

    you are taking the first steps of a journey of smokey excelence. We have all turned out a bad que or two when we started, but you will get better with all of the experience you get to share in.
