vents

How important is it to have vents at the bottom of the smoker (near the flame)? I see that the GOSM dont have them, they only have one on the top. I was at Home Depot yesterday and they had a smoker there that had a vent on both sides at the bottom near the flame and on top (Didn't think to look at the brand). Any input is appreciated.

Haven't found that I need them on my GOSM yet, If I do I will simply add one, not hard to do if needed.
