I have New Braunfels Hondo that I use lump in all the time. Well it appears our WalMart has stopped stocking all there BBQ supplies for the season (no Royal Oak lump!), and all the grills/smokers are on sale.
I've been having problems with the lump I've been buying lately anyway. Lots of tiny pieces and the rare large chunk. I bought Kingsford lump this time, and it wasn't any different than the Royal Oak I'd been buying.
It appears to me that the firebox is a bit small to use straight wood. Can I use wood in this? Or do I need to build a new firebox? Or would it just be easier to build a new smoker to use wood?

Thanks

The lump problem you are going through is because of the way the bags are handled in transport. Not gonna point fingers, but we know how stuff gets handled when no one cares or there is a tight schedule to get stuff done as quick as possible. I buy my RO lump from GFS and if the bags are beat up, i request some other ones out of the back storage. Lump is pretty fragile and tossing or dropping a few times really breaks it down.

I don't know what a Hondo is, so I can't help ya on the log burning question. Someone else will help ya for sure.

I would recommend sticking with mainly lump for the heat. Now... if you build a preburn pit...and shovel coals out... that would work. But be prepared for the wood consumption. It's gonna be ALOT.

That's kinda what I figgered... Just the problem with finding quality lump :(.
Guess I could use a combo of lump and briquettes.
I'll check out a few more sources for lump and see what I come up with.

Thanks

That what I hate about Walmart they pull thing way to early so they can start selling other things like Christmas stuff in august, I never shop at walmart if I don't have to, I go to smaller local hardware and groceries stores.

You may be able to order online

LOL you are too funny... :)
Here in Kansas it gets cold and folks don't want to Q. Not me, I like to grill year round, we'll see this winter how the Q goes when it's cold outside.
I use briquettes in the winter to grill (that and all the limbs that I've picked up over the last year).
