Howdy my name is Colby,

This is my first post here : ).

I have a nearly identical New Braunfels Smoker,  that I'm also trying to refurbish. The outside of the smoker is in good shape with the exception of the underside. I've painted the inside with the 1200 degree black grill paint. It looks pretty decent. I'm also replacing the three wood rails on the front.

My question is this, how well do I need to sand the interior of the lower pit before I paint it?

The smoker I'm refurbishing is the same design at the one in this photo, however the temperature gauge is missing on mine.

Thanks

Colby

Just hit it with some medium grit paper, if there's rust you prolly want to get a power sander to get that out just enough for the paint to stick

Just remember, if you don't get all the rust you'll do it again. Don't buff through the steel, don't degrade the pipe substantially, but get all the rust. Pits normally sit in the weather uncovered so it is going to be abused.

That's just my thoughts. If I wash and wax the entire SUV why wouldn't I take the time to armorall the tites?
