temperature difference on an offset smoker

Is it normal to have a major difference in temperature from the firebox side to the other side???? I have an Horizon 16" offset smoker with the convection plate. I'm using an Maverick ET-733 with both probes at grate level. I tried moving the convection plate right up to the firebox and also moving the Plat 2-3" away from the firebox. Any tip or comments would be helpful to this newbie smoker

What are you calling a major difference? I'm not sure about the mods available for your smoker but use the search bar and see what might help.

Is the exhaust on the opposite side of the smoker from the firebox.... if so, you use many small plates... and they should be installed above the firebox to cook chamber opening....

they are called "tuning plates".....
