I thought it might be a good challenge to smoke a ham from the butcher. Of course, I didn't realize hams have to cured, etc.

So, as an alternative, I bought a cheap grocery store ham and smoked that.

I'm still working on my skills with smoking, so I'd say this came out "ok".

I used hickory and the smoke flavor was a little strong, so maybe applewood or a short smoke. Anybody have any tips on this?

the best smoked hams are the cheapest 1's-try and search for BBQ Bubba's link on how he does his hams.there easy and really good-slather yellow musturd and than your fav. rub-since it's already cooked smoke at 225 ish.till a good bark forms-don't spritz for the first couple hrs. than spritz with apple juice every hr.
 
I have never tried to smoked a picnic ham before but I have smoked a many of raw hams. There a whole differant story.
 
It sure looks good. You might try Maple next time and see if you like it.
