Sliding grate question

Might be a dumb question but if you have a lower grate and an upper grate, with two doors, the slide rails in the middle would be attached to the front and back of chamber. If one was to do a whole hog, you could remove the upper grates but would still have the slides in the way. Anyone have a way to make them removeable or any other ideas?

I would think one could remove them and maybe bolt them in place?
 
Ok yes the middle slide rackguide thingy is usually welded in place on a lang or some other smokers like you are referring to.
