I have read alot on here about using Royal Oak....and my question is this:

is Royal Oak briquette's (red bag, yellow letters, and spanish on one side of the bag, english on the other) the good stuff, or is there a royal oak lump?

also...I found the Royal Oak briquette's at $6.49 9lb bag, and the cowboy lump at $4.37 at Lowe's...is this a good price?

I ended up with 3 bags of the cowboy lump, mostly because all the talk about using lump, and not knowing whether or not the Royal Oak briquettes was what ever body was refferring too...

Are you sure that was $6.47 for a 9lb bag of royal oak? I just bought a bag at lowes(only place that carries royal oak around here) at it was the same price for a 20lb bag. If the price is for a 9lb bag then I don't think it is a great deal.
The Cowboy lump I bought several (for the price you listed) of b/c the only other lump choice around is Kingsford and it cost more. The Cowboy is cheaper and you get more of it but it seems like it burns mighty quick.

I've never used RO Briquettes, but do use their lump. Actually since I've started using lump, I can tell when briquettes are used, and don't care for it. Sidebar story: My wife and I were in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and ate at the Weber grill restaurant. Good food, but I could taste a slight bitter flavor that I'm sure was from briquettes (maybe I'm just looney!). Anyhow, I think the RO lump here in the middle Missouri Wally World is a 9 lb bag and is about $6 bucks. The cowboy lump (not sure of the weight) is about the same size of bag, but I find it to burn twice as fast as RO.

I'm pretty sure it was 9lbs...it was the exact same size as the cowboy lump...but it did weigh significantly more...

That was 20lbs then. That is not a bad price. It is actually cheaper than Kingsford. Like I said I just bought the same things at Lowes this past weekend.
Try a bag of each and see what you like and how it works in your smoker.
