I just purchased the Perfect Flame 36" smoker from Lowe's, I believe it is also called BBQ Grillware. My question pertains to the lower vents. In reading Jeff's Guide to the GOSM smoker, which is just like this one really, he suggest closing the bottom to vents (they don't full close by design). Do you do that for the most efficient smoke? I've noticed that I can open or close them and it doesn't effect the temp much at all. Just wondering how other people set theirs. Thanks!

The lower vents are sometimes used in the open position to bring in more air, thus a better/faster burn. Some of us GOSM owners do keep the bottom vent closed, and keep the exhaust/top vent wide open. You mentioned little temp change, at which rack level, and have you calibrated the therm? Just asking, good luck my friend.

I judged the temp change by the fairly unscientific method of the built in thermometer, which I haven't calibrated in any way. Just an overall observation from the 2/3 level up where the built in one is. I do seem to get a little better smoke with the vents closed.

He is correct in saying almost all thermometers that come on a grill are crap and cannot be trusted this was true on all 3 of mine
