Nomex gasket

This may sound like a stupid question, but I just don't understand why...everyone puts their nomex on the body of the smoker (off set smokers)  and not on the lids...why is that..is there a reason for this..I just did it too, but after I got done, I thought, why didn't I put this on the lid, seems like a better solution.  The way it is now, on the smoker body, you can see the nomex, but if I would have put it on the lid, you would not see any of the nomex and I think it would have worked just as well, am I wrong, there must be a reason every one puts it on the body and not the lid...
