hi my name is Ryan i live in nw montana and i use a charbroil split door vertical charcoal smoker.i am going to start a 9 lb brisket around 5 am ill have some picks throughout the cook i have modded my smoker already it will be 30 to 40 degrees out how much charcoal should i start with?

First off. Welcome. I just joined a little while ago myself. This is a great forum, unfortunately I can' t get on line as much as I want. I would love to answer your question with an exact answer but there are way to many variables for me to give a good answer. Every time I smoke it is different. I live in Louisiana so humidity has a big impact. How long are you planning on smoking your brisket?

probably the whole 12 or more hours it is raining and should be 40 degrees tomorrow afternoon probably low 30s when i start it at around 5 am. i did a pork shoulder when it we around 20 degrees out but i was hoping that with it being warm i wouldnt have to use as much charcoal when i did the shoulder i used about 4 or 5 lbs up front then added more every hour to keep it around 250.
